House Liberty Caucus Urges Opposition To #HR 1625

House Liberty Caucus statement on House amendment to Senate amendment to #HR1625, Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2018

The House Liberty Caucus urges opposition to the House amendment to the Senate amendment to H.R. 1625, Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2018. The omnibus appropriations bill, a staggering 2,232 pages made available less than 17 hours ago, is filled with reckless spending and includes policy riders unrelated to government funding.

Since the passage of Obamacare in 2010, Republicans have ridiculed then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi for saying: “...we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” Yet, in complete hypocrisy, House leaders have embraced the same absurd approach. And this happens time and again with bills to fund the government: House leaders force votes on legislation that no one—not members of Congress, nor the American public—has had time to read.

The policy riders included in the bill are little more than attempts to bribe certain members into voting for an irresponsible increase in spending. This effort to form a coalition of members who value their pet projects over the fiscal condition of our nation—to get the bill across the finish line—is disgraceful. Even worse, House leaders are cynically using a pay raise for troops to convince representatives to support the bill. The men and women of our Armed Forces shouldn’t be used as pawns.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2018 is another example of House leaders’ refusal to address Washington’s spending addiction. The American people are sick of reckless spending. They deserve a Congress that reflects the will of the people instead of just the will of House leaders and special interests.
