PHOENIX ̶ On Saturday evening, April 29, 2017, a patient of the
Arizona State Hospital’s Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center ran
from a regularly scheduled off-site treatment related activity. The patient
dodged state hospital staff in the escape and removed their GPS tracking device.
The patient is considered to be a moderate risk for potential harm to
others. Hospital staff immediately notified the Phoenix Police Department when
the incident occurred and will continue to work with police during this
investigation.
The Arizona State Hospital is working to assess the security of all
off-site treatment activity. Our hospital team is committed to continuing its
therapeutic and rehabilitative care for some of the most vulnerable patients in
our community.
The Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center is a civil
commitment program mandated by the Arizona Legislature to provide supervision,
care, and treatment to men adjudicated as sexually violent persons who have
already completed their prison sentence. All admissions and readmissions to, and
discharges from the center are court ordered.
