Number
of independents fall below Republican registrations for first time since January
2014
Phoenix – The latest voter
registration figures have been released and according to Secretary of State
Michele Reagan, the number of registered Republicans has surged past that of
enrolled independents for the first time since January of 2014.
Of the state's
3,400,611
voters,
1,185,023
are
Republicans, 1,019,050
are
Democrats and 1,164,373
have
not designated an officially recognized party preference. Libertarians and
members of the Green party make up a little less than one percent of the state’s
total registration.
“These numbers seem
to indicate voters are reengaging with the political parties for this election
cycle,” said Secretary Reagan. “While many independents chose to register with
the parties for the closed Presidential Preference Election, they apparently
decided to stay. It’s great to see the total number of registered voters grow
during this election cycle regardless of their political affiliation. I’m
optimistic it will also translate into higher turnout at the polls. Voters
understand the issues in this election are too important for them to
ignore.”
The latest voter
registration figures compiled by county, congressional district and legislative
district are available on www.azsos.gov or by
