President Trump To Re-establish The Navy Second Fleet

No automatic alt text available.Obama Got Rid Of The 2nd Fleet In 2011 But Trump Is Bringing It Back. “Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict.”

With the support of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and the Secretary of the Navy, the Trump administration has decided to reestablish the 2nd Fleet.
It will happen in Norfolk on July 1st and the new command will be responsible for naval forces along the east coast and North Atlantic Ocean.

The Trump Administration's new national defense strategy prioritized countering Russia and China's naval build-up and expressed concerns about their naval capability, particularly with regard to its submarine fleet, as well as the increased presence in the Atlantic.

CNO John Richardson says “Our national defense strategy makes clear that we’re back in an era of great power competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex.”
The 2nd Fleet was dis-established in 2011 to save costs. The Naval Institute says "Before the 2014 seizure of Crimea by Russian forces, the role of U.S. warships operating on the American side of the Atlantic was largely in support of humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions and drug interdiction work.

"In 2016, now-Naval Forces Europe commander Adm. James Foggo III put the conflict in stark terms when he declared the U.S. and Russia were engaged in the 'Fourth Battle of the Atlantic.'

“Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict.”
“Not only have Russia’s actions and capabilities increased in alarming and confrontational ways, its national-security policy is aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners.”

The 2nd Fleet was originally formed following WW-II with the primary mission of supporting NATO.
2nd Fleet's area of responsibility include 6.7 million sq. miles of the Atlantic from the North Pole to the Caribbean and from the shores of the US to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Prior to dis-establishment, 2nd Fleet oversaw 126 ships, 4500 aircraft and 90,000 personnel homeported at US Naval installations along the East Coast.
