Opinion at AZCentral: Hey, GOP, we're only hurting ourselves

Letter: Hey, GOP, we're only hurting ourselves

I have been a Republican precinct committeeman in Maricopa County and a state committeeman for many years. During this time, I have witnessed the evolution of our party.

I wish I could say that it has been a positive evolution, but in reality, some leaders have become increasingly bitter, hateful and rude.

It is natural for Republicans to disagree on issues, as each of us is entitled to our own opinions. But to publicly chastise leaders such as John McCain and Robert Graham does nothing to unify our party and attract new voters.

All it does is turn people away from our party and give Democrats ammunition to attack us. Worst of all is the deplorable behavior I witnessed toward McCain supporters.

Older men were cursing at young female volunteers and shouting derogatory comments. That is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by our party.

We should be applauding the younger generation for getting involved in the political process, not attacking them for supporting a certain candidate.

At the Arizona GOP meeting this weekend, I witnessed a positive shift in behavior that could be a turning point for our party. I am proud the floor resolutions against John McCain and Robert Graham were denied and rational minds prevailed. Hopefully, we can move on from this unproductive drama and unite the party as we approach the November election.
