Phoenix Arizona Council Candidate "Quiet Kate" mum on SRP ties and Decision to fund Super Bowl Venture over Aid for City's Poor

For Immediate Release January 16, 2013
SOUTH PHOENIX ANTI-POVERTY ACTIVIST INVITES PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE AND SALT RIVER PROJECT PAID BOOSTER “QUIET KATE” WIDLAND-GALLEGO TO EXPLAIN TO VOTERS HER “BOUGHT AND BOSSED SILENCE” OVER EMPLOYER SRP’S 1 MILLION DOLLAR SUPER BOWL “INVESTMENT” STRATEGY. MINISTER SAYS, “CANDIDATE NEVER SAID A MUMBLING WORD ABOUT THE SOUTHSIDE’S POOR PICKING UP THE TAB.”
THE REVEREND JARRETT MAUPIN SAYS KATE WIDLAND-GALLEGO, WHO CLAIMS THAT “ASSISTING LOW INCOME CUSTOMERS” IS A MAJOR PART OF HER JOB DESCRIPTION AT SRP, SHOULD JOIN HIM IN DEMANDING THAT SRP EXPEDITE FUNDING FOR SOUTH PHOENIX CUSTOMERS FOR INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS, OVER-DUE MAINTENANCE, AND ASSISTANCE FOR THE POOR AS THE UTILITY CELEBRATES GIFTING MONEY IN ATTEMPT TO LURE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TO GLENDALE.
Phoenix, AZ – Calling her silence on the issue “dangerously hypocritical”, the Rev. Jarrett Maupin is challenging Phoenix City Council Candidate Kate Widland-Gallego, who brags of being called the “best choice” for working families, to denounce her employer’s (Salt River Project) decision to invest 1 Million Dollars to lure a sports game to the City of Glendale before it does it’s part to help long-suffering residential customers in South Phoenix. “If Quiet-Kate Widland-Gallego can’t or won’t defend the poor and minority residents of District 8 against the wasteful spending and bill, bill, bill, but never rebuild attitude of HER OWN utility-employer, how can we trust her to work in our best interest on the city council?” Maupin asks. Calling her recent endorsement by District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski bunk, Maupin asserts this is another example of Widland-Gallego being out of touch with South Phoenix residents. “Kate Widland-Gallego brags about being called the best choice for working families by Michael, but her actions or lack thereof make her the absolute worst choice. Working families in District 8 who are struggling to pay rising utility bills don’t agree with SRP’s decision to gift 1 million dollars for special interests to bring a football game to another city before they reinvest in underserved rate-payers’ neighborhoods. If Kate Widland-Gallego doesn’t know that, she doesn’t know South Phoenix.” Maupin said. The Activist says residents have been complaining to organizers, pastors, and Black and Brown south-side politicos about Kate Widland-Gallego and her “special relationship” with special interests and “greed before need” political stances. “How could a woman not understand or remain silent about the fears of poor working mothers, mothers who have to decide whether to pay their electric bill in-full or buy all the groceries they need to feed their hungry children?” the Reverend asks. “By remaining silent on this issue, Kate Widland-Gallego is turning a blind-eye to SRP snatching bread from the mouths of South Phoenix’s Black, Brown, and poor White babies. She’s a professional utility booster and isn’t paid to care about working families. She gets paid to sell them out. ” Maupin said. Media Contact: 602-718-8929
