Arizona lawmakers praise, criticize migrant-reform proposals

As Congress and President Barack Obama released proposals for immigration reform this week, the debate over the contentious issue has begun to shift from the states’ role in immigration enforcement to what a federal comprehensive immigration-reform plan should look like.

Arizona has championed state immigration enforcement in the past few years, most notably with passage of the controversial Senate Bill 1070.
It also has solidified its ongoing role in the national conversation with the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. through Arizona and the state’s vocal political leaders on both sides of the issue.
“Arizona is ground zero for the ongoing immigration-reform discussion,” said state Sen. Anna Tovar, D-Tolleson, who traveled to Las Vegas to hear Obama in person. “And Arizona is a great starting point. Washington can learn from Arizona’s trials and tribulations.” SOURCE
